AUCKLAND — New Zealand rugby is turning its attention to the Bledisloe Cup after a physically demanding international series against South Africa left the All Blacks managing a significant injury list.

Captain Ardie Savea is set to undergo shoulder surgery after suffering a dislocation during the four-Test series against the Springboks.

The injury will keep Savea out of the upcoming Bledisloe Cup Tests against Australia, with his return timetable to be determined after surgery.

New Zealand lost the four-Test series against South Africa 3–1, adding further importance to the team’s preparations for its next international assignment.

The All Blacks are scheduled to meet Australia in Auckland on 10 October before the return fixture in Sydney the following week.

Several New Zealand internationals have meanwhile returned to domestic provincial rugby as the national coaching group assesses playing options ahead of the Australian Tests.

New Zealand Rugby reported in late September that 11 All Blacks were returning to Hilux NPC action, including Scott Barrett, who was named for Taranaki after an extended period away from competition.

The domestic matches provide valuable playing opportunities as New Zealand rebuilds its squad following the South African series.

The Bledisloe Cup remains one of rugby’s longest-running international rivalries and continues to carry considerable sporting significance on both sides of the Tasman Sea.

For the All Blacks, the October matches will provide an immediate test of squad depth and the team’s ability to respond after a difficult series against the reigning strength of South African rugby.
