LAGOS — Nigeria’s role in Africa’s artificial-intelligence landscape is expanding as the country combines a large digital market, a vibrant startup ecosystem and growing policy interest in responsible technology.

Recent international benchmarking highlighted Nigeria’s progress in responsible AI, placing the country at the forefront of Africa in an index assessing the ability of governments and societies to develop and manage artificial intelligence responsibly.

The development is significant for a country already recognised as one of Africa’s major technology and startup centres.

Lagos has emerged as a focal point for fintech, software, digital commerce and technology entrepreneurship, while Abuja plays an important role in national digital policy and regulation.

Artificial intelligence is now broadening that discussion.

Businesses are exploring AI applications in areas ranging from financial services and logistics to education, agriculture and customer support. At the same time, policymakers face questions involving data protection, transparency, cybersecurity, employment and the responsible use of automated systems.

Nigeria has also been working toward greater coordination of its digital regulatory environment. The rapid expansion of online platforms and digital services has made regulatory consistency increasingly important for both local companies and international investors.

The opportunity is substantial. Nigeria’s large population and rapidly growing digital economy create a sizeable domestic market in which new technologies can be tested and scaled.

But technological leadership will depend on more than startup activity.

Reliable electricity, broadband access, digital skills, research capacity and clear governance frameworks will all influence whether Nigeria can convert AI adoption into sustainable productivity gains.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into global commerce and public services, Nigeria’s approach could provide an important case study in how a major African economy balances technological innovation with responsible governance.
