LAGOS — Nigeria is looking to deepen investment in its creative and digital industries as Nollywood, music and online entertainment continue to expand the country’s cultural influence beyond Africa.
Recent discussions involving the Nigerian government and international investors have focused on film, entertainment, digital services and fibre-optic infrastructure.
The combination reflects an important shift in the way the creative economy is being viewed.
Film and music are no longer isolated cultural sectors. Streaming platforms, mobile connectivity, digital payments, broadband infrastructure and social media increasingly determine how Nigerian creative content is produced, distributed and monetised.
Nollywood has developed into one of the world’s most recognisable film industries, while Nigerian music — particularly Afrobeats — has built a major international audience.
That global visibility creates opportunities for investment in production studios, cinemas, streaming, live entertainment, intellectual property and tourism.
Nigeria is also seeking to retain more of the economic value generated by its creative talent.
Local production facilities, professional training, stronger distribution networks and improved protection of intellectual property could help creators and businesses capture a larger share of revenue generated by Nigerian content.
Digital infrastructure is central to that ambition. Faster and more reliable broadband can expand access to streaming services, support content production and allow creative businesses to reach audiences without relying entirely on traditional distribution channels.
The creative economy also offers Nigeria an opportunity to diversify beyond oil and other commodity-based industries.
The challenge will be turning international cultural recognition into sustainable businesses and employment at home.
Nigeria already possesses one of Africa’s strongest cultural brands. The next stage will depend on building the infrastructure, investment environment and commercial systems needed to transform that influence into durable economic growth.
