CANBERRA — Australia is expanding its investment in technologies designed to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of large-scale renewable energy projects.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency announced on 23 September 2026 that it would provide $25 million to Equans Solar & Storage for the Lightspeed project.
The three-year initiative will test and deploy a portfolio of technologies across the company’s solar and storage pipeline in Australia.
One of the first technologies scheduled for testing is an autonomous inspection robot known as the Nextpower Ranger. ARENA said the project would bring the technology into an Australian solar-farm environment.
Automation, robotics and digital technologies are becoming increasingly important as Australia expands renewable electricity generation and energy-storage infrastructure.
Large solar developments can cover extensive areas, making construction, inspection and maintenance significant components of project costs. Technologies capable of automating some of those operations could potentially improve productivity and reduce operating expenses.
Australia has abundant solar resources and has become one of the world’s leading markets for rooftop solar. The next stage of the country’s energy transition increasingly involves large-scale renewable generation, battery storage, transmission infrastructure and technologies capable of managing a more complex electricity system.
Reducing the cost of building and operating those assets will be important as renewable energy accounts for a larger share of Australia’s electricity supply.
The latest investment illustrates how the country’s energy transition is developing not only as an infrastructure programme but also as a testing ground for robotics, digital systems and new industrial technologies.
